Four Systems That Survived the Backtest

We ran 3.3 million historical odds snapshots through roughly 1,300 strategy configurations across six seasons and twelve leagues. Almost everything failed. These four systems passed out-of-sample validation and are documented below with their real numbers, including the ugly parts.

All figures are historical backtest results at flat stakes, stated per bet. Past results do not guarantee future returns. Nothing here is financial advice.

NBA Rebounds Under

Player props, T-45 minutes before tip

The strongest system in the study. Rebound lines are shaded high because casual money piles onto overs, and the under side quietly carries the value.

Why the edge exists

  • Betting a player to do something is fun. Betting on absence is not. That one-way flow lets books shade rebound lines a half-step high and tax the over.
  • Two completely independent methods agree here: our machine-learning prop models flagged rebounds unders in 2024, and this study rediscovered the same edge using nothing but disagreement between sportsbooks.
  • The edge is growing, not decaying. It was negative in 2023, then improved every season as prop menus and book count expanded.

The rule

45 minutes before tip, strip the vig from every book's over/under pair on each rebounds line. Average all books into a consensus fair price, excluding the book you are about to bet. If any book's under pays 2% or more above fair, bet it.

2023: -5.2% | 2024: +3.3% | 2025: +9.3% | 2026: +8.3%

Honest risk note

Prop limits are small and books restrict prop winners faster than anything else. The edge survives; your account longevity is the real constraint. Typical odds around +113 on lines from 2.5 to 7.5 rebounds.

MLB Morning Moneylines

Moneylines, roughly 6 hours before first pitch

The biggest per-bet edge in the study. Morning baseball lines are stale, and the sharpest book in the world updates hours before everyone else.

Out-of-sample test

Why the edge exists

  • Overnight news moves baseball: confirmed starters, lineups, weather. Sharp money hits Pinnacle first, so its morning line already contains the news.
  • Slower books sit on last night's number for hours. Most of the value lands on underdogs, because news that shifts a game a few points turns yesterday's fair dog price into today's overlay.
  • About 4 in 5 qualifying bets are dogs at a median price near +140.

The rule

On the morning line, remove the vig from Pinnacle's moneyline to get a fair win probability. Bet any book whose price implies 3% or more of edge against that fair number.

2021: +42.1% | 2022: +14.2% | 2023: +15.4% | 2024: +26.5% | 2025: +14.8% | 2026: +16.4%

Honest risk note

Execution is the bottleneck. A large share of qualifying prices sit at books US bettors cannot use. Restricted to US-licensed books the edge held at +45% but produced only about one bet every two or three days, and morning limits on baseball dogs are modest.

MLB Opening Totals

Game totals at the opening number

The volume workhorse. When totals first post, books disagree the most about run environment, and the laggards are pickable on both sides.

Why the edge exists

  • Park factors, wind, bullpen fatigue and lineup quality get priced in gradually through the day. The opener is where pricing is loosest.
  • This is not an over or under lean. Qualifying bets split almost exactly 50/50 by side. It is purely price versus fair value.
  • The edge decays toward zero by first pitch, so speed to the opener is the whole game.

The rule

At the opening or early-morning number, remove the vig from Pinnacle's total. Bet any book priced 1% or more above fair, over or under.

2021: +2.0% | 2022: +11.2% | 2023: +5.9% | 2024: +5.9% | 2025: +11.4% | 2026: +4.1%

Honest risk note

Smallest per-bet margin of the four, so it needs volume: roughly 4 bets per day all season at near coin-flip odds. Closing line value is thin by design; this system wins at the open, not at the close.

MLB Strikeouts Under

Pitcher strikeout props, T-45 minutes

The niche sibling of the rebounds system. Strikeouts are the fun side of the prop, the public bets them over, and the under carries the value.

Why the edge exists

  • Same engine as the NBA rebounds system, pointed at pitcher strikeout lines from 3.5 to 6.5.
  • It rhymes with everything else we know: our earlier MLB modeling found batter-hits unders, this study found the pitcher-side twin.
  • Around 2 qualifying bets per slate at a median price near +128, mostly at mainstream US books.

The rule

45 minutes before first pitch, build the leave-one-out consensus fair price from every book's strikeout over/under pair. Bet any under priced 2% or more above fair.

2024: +14.0% | 2025: +10.2% | 2026: +8.5%

Honest risk note

Smallest sample of the four. On its own it would not clear our strictest statistical bar; it earns its place because it is the same mechanism as two independently validated unders edges. Treat it as a satellite position, not a core holding.

Methodology

How these numbers were earned

3.3 million odds snapshots

Every featured market across 12 leagues back to 2020, plus player props, high-frequency line-movement ladders and derivative markets. 36 to 40 books per snapshot, settled against official final scores.

A locked out-of-sample period

The final four months of data stayed sealed during all research. Each finished system was run against it exactly once. No retuning afterward.

Correlation-honest statistics

The same game-side quoted at 30 books is one opportunity, not 30 wins. All significance testing collapses to independent opportunities first, which cuts reported confidence roughly in half versus naive counting.

Fake edges hunted and killed

The loudest signals in any odds backtest are data artifacts. We found and removed four whole classes, including European books quoting regulation-time hockey markets under standard labels, which fakes +12% ROI over thousands of bets if left in.

Executability graded separately

Every system is scored twice: once across all books, once restricted to US-licensed books you can actually use. Systems that only work at unreachable books are labeled that way instead of hidden.

What we tested and rejected

A results page you can trust has a graveyard. These popular ideas failed our validation and we are telling you anyway.

NHL totals valueEntirely a data artifact from regulation-time markets at European books
Blind underdog bettingThe famous dog bias shrinks to roughly zero at US-licensed books
Steam chasingReal signal, but too few independent events to trust the returns

FAQ

Reading the results honestly

Are these results real bets or a backtest?

+

Every figure is a historical backtest at flat stakes, stated per bet, run across 3.3 million odds snapshots and six seasons. Each finished system was tested once against a locked out-of-sample period it never saw during research. Past results do not guarantee future returns.

What does out-of-sample validation mean here?

+

The final four months of data stayed sealed while every system was designed and tuned. Each system was then run against that sealed period exactly once, with no retuning afterward. It is the closest thing to a live-forward test you can do on historical data.

Can I actually place these bets at US sportsbooks?

+

It varies by system. Executability is graded separately: each system is scored across all books and again restricted to US-licensed books. The rebounds and strikeouts prop systems run mostly at mainstream US books, while the biggest moneyline edge leans on prices many US bettors cannot reach.

How should I size these bets?

+

All figures assume flat stakes. If you prefer edge-proportional sizing, a fractional Kelly approach keeps variance in check. The Kelly stake calculator handles the math. Prop limits are small and books restrict winners fast, so account longevity is often the real constraint, not the edge.
